Pretoria - Two suspects, who hijacked a car in front of a crèche in the eastern suburbs of the city, were arrested shortly afterwards after they tried to get rid of their getaway vehicle at Menlyn Park shopping centre.
Inspector Anton Breedt said a man was robbed of his BMW X5 in front of the Kiddies' Academy crèche in Garsfontein about 12:15 on Wednesday.
The man was waiting for his wife who was fetching their child from the crèche.
Breedt said three armed men approached the man and apparently ordered him out of his car at gunpoint.
Meanwhile, a second group of hijackers, who might have been with the trio, failed to take the vehicle of another motorist also waiting outside the crèche.
The suspects sped away in the BMW, which was found abandoned at the corner of Malcolm and Neser streets a few minutes later.
Chased after the gold Jeep
Breedt said police were alerted by radio to be on the lookout for another vehicle, a gold-coloured Jeep Cherokee, in which the suspects had been seen.
Police spotted the second vehicle and chased it. The suspects crashed through the shopping centre's gates in Atterbury Road, left the vehicle in the undercover parking lot and ran away.
Two were arrested by police and the centre's security guards.
Breedt said a third man was still at large.
Nobody was injured during the drama and no shots were fired at the centre.
